Inspiration Wall – Turning 40 October 18, 2009

I’m clinging to the last shreds of my 30s and freaking out a bit more than any of us could have predicted. Granted, much of my anxiety is caused by endless drama in just about every aspect of my life, but turning 40 is a milestone or benchmark and you start to realize some things which I won’t get into here.

I never thought I would be vain and ridiculous about turning 40 – I always pictured myself giving one of those, “I’m so PROUD to be the age I am because every wrinkle and smile line…I’ve earned!  I’ve never felt so powerful and beautiful!” speeches, but instead I predict the fetal position under my bed and/or sitting in my snuggie eating oatmeal pies.

To cheer myself up, I’ve collected an ‘inspiration wall’ of celebrity women over 40 whom I think are beautiful. If THEY can do it and be happy about it, then so can I.   Or at least I can work on it.  Whatever.

It’s strange – I’m having the opposite reaction. I thought I’d be curled in a fetal position under the bed but instead I feel the need to abandon my fears about aging and get on with the joy of living. Worrying about an age number is really wasting what little time we have here! I keep hearing my grandfather’s reply whenever someone would ask him his age. He’d say: I’m a little younger than my eyes, and a little older than my teeth.

I also found this Rene Russo quote that I like.

“There is so much more than that little space from 14 to 40. And if you cut that off and begin to believe that you are not good past a certain age, then you end up scared and insecure and afraid. That is definitely NOT beautiful.” – Rene Russo
